Our Work With The University Of Hull Careers Service And Computer Science Department

As a fast-growing business based in Yorkshire, we have found the University of Hull Careers and Employability Service extremely helpful in our recruitment efforts. After working together for a number of years we are proud to have a strong relationship with the Careers Service and Computer Science department that has proven mutually beneficial, helping us recruit graduates, interns and students for yearlong placements.

With the help of the Careers Service, over the last 5 years, we have attended a variety of careers fairs at Hull University. In addition to managing our own stands, we have been given the opportunity to hold talks to groups of students and sit on panels to take questions. These events give us the chance to communicate with local students and get a feel for the roles they are looking for. As a direct result of attending these careers fairs, we have recruited a number of exceptional graduates who have all become valuable members of our team.

This year, it was a privilege for us to hold mock interviews at the University. This gave students the opportunity to experience an interview environment and receive feedback straight away. We spent the day on campus interviewing current Computer Science students and were thrilled to meet many professional and enthusiastic individuals excited about a career in software.

Another event we have had the chance to take part in has been the 3 Thing Game. A large percentage of Computer Science students at Hull University are involved in the 3 Thing Game so we identified this as an opportunity to increase our engagement with students across the University.  With help from the Careers Service and Computer Science Department, we sponsored the event and attended as industry guests. We were able to take a look at each groups’ games, chat to participants and talk about work in our industry, acting as guest judges on the final day.

We were also invited to take part in a panel of industry experts for the Computer Science Master’s final year project presentations. As part of the panel, we were tasked with asking questions after each presentation, offering feedback and deciding on the ‘best project’ for an award at the end. The projects involved working part-time in small teams, developing for real clients, supervised by an external commercial manager. We were blown away by the professionalism and skill shown by each team, the presentations were a great representation of the hard work and dedication we regularly see in students from Hull University.

So far, with the support we have received from the Hull University Careers and Employability Service, we have been able to reach talented and engaged students and increase our brand awareness across campus. Nearly half of our team have graduated from Hull University and every year we meet with talented, professional graduates and students interested in the roles available at StyleTech. We are excited to continue to build our relationship with the Careers Service and look forward to working with them in the years to come.
